Our Newest Projects in La Haciendita

Installing Solar Panels

Solar Installation

One of our goals this year is to implement solar energy solutions in La Haciendita. Solar would provide the community with a reliable and affordable source of electricity, reducing dependence on an unstable power grid. The system would include a solar-powered water pumping system that would ensure continuous access to water even during outages, improving both living conditions and public health.

We hope to provide solar to at least 10 homes and the church. The poorest families with the greatnest needs would be a part of phase one installation. This project is approximately $100,000.  Please give!

Transportation Vouchers

One good thing about the Mexican health system is that initial mammograms are FREE!  The challenge, however, is transportation to exams and follow-up appointments. In partnership with the local church and clinic, MBM wants provide transportation vouchers to appointments for breast exams and required follow-ups. By removing the burden of transportation costs, we aim to ensure that women who may otherwise forgo these critical screenings have the opportunity to prioritize their health. This initiative not only promotes early detection but improves access to healthcare  potentially saving lives and reducing the long-term costs of breast cancer treatment

Summer 2025 -In the News...

Money

Tariffs

The uncertainty around US tariffs on Mexican goods continues to rattle our neighbor's economy. US businesses are hesitant to invest and the current trade agreement is unclear. Jobs have already been loss because of the uncertainty. Additionally, any changes to the trade agreement will adversely effect consumers in both countries. Mexicans will suffer more because of the higher rate of poverty. This situation, makes our community store and co-op spaces even more necessary. They will provide access to goods at an affordable price, provide job opportunities and keep money circulating locally.

Deportations

Since January 20th,  tens of thousands of  Mexicans have been deported. Exact numbers have been difficult to ascertain as this administration has not been forthright with accurate information.  What we do know is that everyone that has been deported was not here illegally nor a criminal. Lives have been destroyed and the social and economic impact is being felt here in the US and in Mexico.

In 2023, remittances from migrants in the U.S. amounted to $63.3 billion, serving as a vital source of income for many Mexicans  who rely on remittances for basic necessities, education and medical expenses. Small businesses also rely on remittance-fueled spending. Unfortunately, this lack of income will lead to increases in poverty, job losses and decreased local economic activity which could spawn the desire for Mexicans to migrate again. MBM is doing what we can to create job opportunities for La Haciendita and surrounding communities.
